The pipe organ is owned by the HTOS and will remain in the Palace Theatre.  HTOS volunteers are working to complete the restoration and reinstallation of the original pipe organ that was begun in 2000.  In cooperation with the Friends of the Palace, the HTOS presents concerts and silent movie shows to support the ongoing pipe organ project and restoration of the Palace Theatre.

The Hilo Theatre Organ Society (aka Hilo Bay Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society) is alive and well!  On 14 February 2005 an agreement was signed by Friends of the Palace President Cheryl “Quack” Moore and Hilo Theatre Organ Society (HTOS) President Don Baker.
Right: Johnny DeMello was the longtime popular organist at the Palace and Hilo theatres.  He is shown here at the original Palace console circa 1934.  This console would be destroyed by the 1960 tsunami that ravaged Hilo.

Hilo High sophomore Devin Chu performed on the Palace Theatre’s giant pipe organ on November 2nd.   He played the Prelude and Fugue in G Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach preceding the screening of the 1922 silent horror movie “Nosferatu”.
Devin has been studying organ for two years with Rick Mazurowski under a scholarship awarded by the Hawaii chapter of the American Guild of Organists.  He has previously performed for the dedication of the new organ at Church of the Holy Cross, studies piano with Kayleen Yuda and plays trombone in his school band.
"Devin is a perfect representative of a new generation of gifted musicians", says Palace Board President "Quack" Moore.  "Young artists like Devin ensure a bright new future for the performing arts, and we are especially pleased to have him here at the Palace playing the historic pipe organ".
An informal session with TOMMY STARK on the Palace Theater pipe organ.
